Katrin Gattinger's first published essay. With a preface by Pierre-Damien Huyghe
La Lettre volée, collection "Essais", Brussels.

Presentation:
Ruses at work. Because in an unfair world, governed by battles of interests, we sometimes need to play tricks, this essay asks the question: what can art do? But rather than looking at the works from the point of view of efficiency, the aim is to observe their inventiveness, to grasp the complexity of their modus operandi. The ruses that make us believe and act while remaining hidden, that enthuse us with their ability to lead a lost cause to triumph, are at the heart of this book, with a preface by the philosopher Pierre-Damien Huyghe. Through a study of the 'practical intelligence' of the processes and logics of five works by artists Peter Rösel, Made in Éric, Olive Martin & Patrick Bernier, Judith Deschamps, Joana Hadjithomas & Khalil Joreige, this essay explores their resistance by drawing on stratagems observed elsewhere (military camouflage, the art system, political actions on justice, internet scams) and the theories devoted to them. These works, from which emanate knowledge, know-how and tricks, invite us to look at how these artistic gestures can help us to think through the conflicts of reality and imagine ways of acting: Spy sculptures that surprise a flagrant offence of inattention; an immobile artistic position that makes a bailiff flee; an unexpected collaboration between artists and lawyers that activates the creative power of the judge; an anticipated dialogue that makes the director of an artistic institution the active principle of the trap that is set for him; stories of scams that lure away the clichés that are (or are not) the daily bread of swindlers.

in Cryogénie – Research-creation space, University of Strasbourg. It is through the practice of tracking – wild animals in forest and rural areas, but also injunctions hidden in street furniture – that Katrin Gattinger develops her recent projects and research, of which she shows with Plan B an inventory of proposals in Cryogenics. – Space for research-creation. Combining animal gestures (which create significant forms of territorial marking) with forms and materials (which construct the urban environment), these projects invite us to think about the place of wild, liminal animals in the city. They create fictions, ways of taking a place, of adapting, of “dealing with” and of finding solutions, like so many ways out in the face of constraints. Scratching, digging, licking concrete and bitumen, distorting the defensive and anti-homeless design are sculptural gestures. They summon an imaginary of impertinence and insolence in the face of commandments inscribed in forms and invite us to think about our room for maneuver in a controlled environment. Scenography: Thomas Lasbouygues. Mediation: Amandine Mussel, Quentin Mervelet, Rose Defer. Production: Cryogénie - Research-creation space, University of Strasbourg, ACCRA, Région Grand Est.

Personal exhibition at Les Abords in Brest (France) from 7 March to 1 April 2022, following a research-creation residency at the University of Western Brittany (UBO) and the European University Institute of the Sea (IUEM).
The exhibition shows the first projects relating to Katrin Gattinger's research on tricks: between stratagems of the living environment, visual traps and sound lures, it is the Alsatian wildlife milieu that is summoned to play the surprise.
Two monumental works, on the one hand a 32m long photographic frieze of a nocturnal landscape where many presences escape ("Then leave") and on the other hand a vast interactive installation sound-images, made in collaboration with the composer Arno Kristensen, who reverses the game of glances ("Being the Barbarian of a wolf"), are at the heart of this exhibition.
